Gordon Lightfoot left lasting legacy on Great Lakes shipwreck culture
Canadian singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot died Monday at the age of 84. Lightfoot’s hit song, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” told the story of the largest ship to ever sink on the Great Lakes. According to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, the song brought attention and awareness to shipwrecks along the Great Lakes and opened people to tell more stories. Natural resource management issues often boil down to people management issues. When it comes to lake management, people can be hard to predict. They may say one thing but do another. They may think they’re good environmental stewards even though some of their behaviors suggest otherwise. But to make meaningful progress in aquatic invasive species management issues, human behavior must be taken into account.
