Environmental groups question Enbridge pipeline hearing

Environmentalists contend the state Department of Natural Resources held a public hearing on Enbridge Inc.’s plans to reroute a northern Wisconsin pipeline prematurely.

Line 5 runs from Superior to Ontario, crossing about 12 miles of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa’s reservation in Ashland County. The tribe sued the company in 2019 to force it to remove the section of line on the reservation.

Hot summer warming up Lake Michigan, experts say

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — Lake Michigan is having a warm summer.

The average surface water temperature was 75.3 degrees on July 9, setting a record for the month based on 26 years of record keeping, government scientists said.

The summer high is 75.6 degrees recorded in August 2016, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or NOAA.

Governor Whitmer Extends Water Re-connection Order To Year’s End

Great Lake Water Temperatures Spike Due to Heat

Michigan Airports Receive $2.5 Million In Grants For PFAS Testing 

Fire-fighting foams containing the toxic chemical called PFAS have been used for decades to put out jet fuel fires.  Fire department training and use of foams contaminated groundwater and drinking water.  The Michigan PFAS Action Response Team is awarding municipal airports throughout the state grant funding for testing of PFAS contamination. Areas like Pellston, MI have been issued $250,000 of this grant due to known impacts on residential wells.

Wastewater Can Show Early Detection of COVID-19 Outbreaks

Researching human waste has proven to be an effective model for tracing and pinpointing COVID-19 infected populations before the area experiences an uptick in cases. In particular, targeting the asymptomatic group that unknowingly carries the virus and spreads it to more vulnerable populations is what makes this research that much more valuable.

(July 10, 2020)—The Healing Our Waters Great Lakes Coalition is strongly supporting the U.S. House Interior and Environment funding bill, which passed out of committee today and contains substantial increases in clean water priorities, including Great Lakes restoration, drinking water and wastewater infrastructure, and lead-reduction in drinking water. The bill’s modest year-over-year increases are bolstered substantially by more than $11 billion in emergency supplemental funding for clean water programs in the bill.

“The Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition fully supports the House Interior and Environment funding bill that was passed out of committee today,” said Laura Rubin, director of the Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition. “The bill substantially boosts federal investments in clean water priorities that will accelerate progress in restoring the Great Lakes, protecting our drinking water, improving access to affordable water, safeguarding public health, and bolstering the economy.

“The priorities in this bill are long-standing Coalition priorities, and we look forward to working with bipartisan members in the House to pass this legislation to better our environment and economy and to protect our public health.”

The Interior and Environment funding bill now heads to the full House of Representatives for consideration. The House is expected to vote on the bill later this month. The funding bill includes:

Regular Appropriations:

  1. Great Lakes Restoration Initiative: Up to $335 million — $15 million increase from Fiscal Year 2020 enacted (FY2020).
  2. Clean Water State Revolving Fund: $1,638,826,000 — no increase from FY2020.
  3. Drinking Water State Revolving Fund: $1,126,088,000 — no increase from FY2020.
  4. Small and Disadvantaged Communities program: $26,000,000 — $592,000 increase from FY2020.
  5. Lead testing in Schools program: $26,000,000 — no increase from FY2020.
  6. Reducing Lead in Drinking Water program: $20,000,000 — $489,000 increase from FY2020.
  7. Sec. 221 Sewer Overflow and Stormwater Reuse Municipal Grants: $56,700,000 — $28.7 million increase.

Additional Emergency Supplemental Funding:

  1. Clean Water State Revolving Fund: $6,355,000,000
  2. Drinking Water State Revolving Fund: $3,855,000,000
  3. Lead Testing in Schools: $50,000,000
  4. Reducing Lead in Drinking Water: $500,000,000
  5. Sec. 221 Sewer Overflow and Stormwater Reuse Municipal Grants: $400,000,000

The clean water priorities in the bill have been long-standing priorities for the Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition. The bill includes funding for fiscal year 2021, which begins October 1, 2020, and ends September 30, 2021.

At 306 AM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking clusters of showers with locally heavy rain, extending along a line from 6 miles northwest of Little Chute to near Central Lake Winnebago. Movement was northeast at 10 mph. The slow movement of the showers may result in urban street flooding and ponding of water on area highways across the Fox Valley.
