Researchers from the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, have developed a way to break down microplastics by genetically altering bacteria. The researchers selected bacteria often found at wastewater plants, because not all microplastics are filtered out before being released into a stream or river. A startup company based in Oberlin, Ohio, has drawn $2.9 million in private investment so far to remove PFAS, often called forever chemicals, from the nation’s drinking water. The U.S. Coast Guard has officially launched Operation Taconite, its annual icebreaking operation on the Great Lakes, for the 2024-25 winter season. It is the Coast Guard’s largest domestic icebreaking operation, with efforts taking place on Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, the St. Marys River, the Straits of Mackinac, and Georgian Bay. Many Michigan cherry growers are adapting to the difficult market and changing climate, planting different varieties or embracing high-density orchards with trees packed more closely together. On New Year’s Day, Superior, Wisconsin, Mayor Jim Paine proclaimed 2025 as “Year of the Fitz,” marking five decades since the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald sank on Lake Superior. Apply today for the 2025 Shipboard Science Workshop aboard the U.S. EPA R/V Lake Guardian on Lake Michigan
Formal and nonformal 5-12th grade educators from Great Lakes’ states are invited to apply for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend a week aboard a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency research vessel alongside scientists and to bring the Great Lakes back to their classrooms. The workshop, organized by the Center for Great Lakes Literacy (CGLL), is July 7-13, 2025. Deadline for applications is Feb. 10, 2025.
Through a partnership with the EPA Great Lakes National Program Office and NOAA, and funding from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, educators will engage in scientific research aboard the ship. Hosts for the Lake Michigan workshop are CGLL partners Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant and Wisconsin Sea Grant.
The annual Shipboard Science Workshops promote Great Lakes sciences while forging lasting relationships between Great Lakes researchers and educators. CGLL is a collaborative effort led by Sea Grant educators throughout the Great Lakes watershed in the U.S. CGLL fosters informed and responsible decisions that advance basin-wide stewardship by providing hands-on experiences, educational resources and networking opportunities promoting Great Lakes literacy among an engaged community of educators, scientists and youth.
