This summer, 35 undergraduate students from across the country conducted research with Freshwater@UW, the University of Wisconsin’s cross-site, cross-discipline research opportunities program. Freshwater@UW is supported by the Freshwater Collaborative, Wisconsin Sea Grant, Water@UW–Madison, the Water Resources Institute and the University of Wisconsin–Madison Graduate School. In the final weeks of the program, students reflected on what they learned. We’ll share several of their stories over the coming months. Here’s Ellen Chadwick, an undergraduate sophomore in biology and environmental studies from Kenyon College, Ohio, who worked with Michael Holly at UW–Green Bay.

My love and appreciation for wetlands has grown over the past few years, deepening significantly this summer. After learning about their amazing powers of capturing carbon, filtering nutrients and toxins out of water and buffering coastlines from storms, I learned to appreciate an ecosystem that I had never given much thought to before. Not to mention, they are teeming with life and provide habitat for many incredible animals. 

Because of all of this, I was eager to participate in my current research project about phosphorus removal in constructed wetlands. The overall project was highly applied and interdisciplinary, with chemists, biologists and engineers working together in a vibrant lab. And that’s only a small part of it. In the field, we worked with government researchers. Beyond that, this project involved farmers, city planners and really anyone with an interest in clean water. I studied five native wetland plants, testing if any are especially good at removing phosphorus and could be used in constructed wetlands.

As much as I enjoyed the research aspect of this summer, my favorite part was that this project is so applied. I always looked forward to days where I visited places with restored wetlands, whether that be the constructed wetland at our field site, a stormwater retention pond or a full restoration project site. I was always surprised by the richness of biodiversity in these “artificial” wetlands and how easily life will return to an area once the habitat is there.

The first time I visited a field site, I was shocked by the abundance of tiny tadpoles darting through the water. I was also unaware of the bustling community of macroinvertebrates living in the water, invisible to my own eyes but fascinating to watch under a microscope. All of these creatures represented a thriving aquatic community that played a crucial role in nutrient cycling and ecosystem balance.

Visiting the Oneida Nation prairie restoration site was definitely the highlight of my summer and affirmed my interest in environmental conservation and restoration. The land was just breathtaking, filled with incredible biodiversity. There were leopard frogs hopping around, toads waddling clumsily, and even baby spring peepers that would sit right on my finger! Dragonflies and damselflies darted around elegantly, catching glints of sunlight on their iridescent wings.

As we walked, the project manager, Tony Kuchma, told us about the immense effort to restore 3,000 acres of prairie from farmland, working tirelessly with native seed mixes and prescribed burns. Joe Torres, an enrolled member of the Oneida Nation, added how Indigenous values, such as reciprocity and responsibility, informed the restoration project alongside science. 

This summer experience has deepened my passion for environmental conservation and sustainability. It reaffirmed my belief in the power of scientific research to inform and guide sustainable practices, as well as the importance of considering many viewpoints when addressing sustainability. I have developed a greater appreciation for fieldwork and the resilience of natural systems and, of course, a deeper fondness for wetlands.

When making conservation plans, producers and conservation professionals alike want to know the impact that farm practices have on our local water.  Through work funded by Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance and Outagamie County have developed a Farm Progress Report to tell the story of conservation, one farm at a time.

The Farm Progress Report utilizes data from SNAP+, a program widely used by Wisconsin farmers, to generate modeled soil and phosphorus loss on each field based on soil type, phosphorus test results, and field management (tillage, manure management, crop cycle, etc).

This information is then compiled to create per field and per farm loss data, which is compared to the local conservation goal of 1 lb per acre per year of phosphorus loss and 0.5 tons per acre per year of soil loss.  This information is visualized in the Farm Progress Report through simple to read graphs that include the annual average compared to the community goal as well as tables that list the top ten fields to improve.

The Farm Progress Report has two purposes:

  1. Farm Knowledge: For farmers to understand the impact of their current farm practices on water quality, the goals for the community, and how they can make changes on their farm to improve their phosphorus and soil loss
  2. Communication: Farmers can utilize the Farm Progress Report to communicate with their local communities to show the positive impact they are having as well as to their processors to show that they have adopted conservation practices that may meet the processor’s environmental standards

A Farm Progress report was generated for each producer participating in the GLRI grant project and Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance and Outagamie County LWCD met with each farm, along with their agronomist.  The Farm Progress Report was presented to each farm with an explanation of where the data was derived from, the community goal, and where their current farm practices compared to the goal.  Feedback was solicited from the producer and their agronomist on the information presented and the response was positive.  Producers understood the how the data was derived, how their on-field practices generated that data, and were interested in the potential of using the Farm Progress Report to communicate the great work they are doing to meet conservation goals in their watershed.

Further work will need to be done to streamline the data collection and input process and to ensure that the SNAP+ system is used consistently across the basin.  Overall, the Farm Progress Report was well received by farmers and they expressed interest in continuing to use it to watch their progress toward improving water quality.  Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance intends to continue developing the report and promoting its widespread adoption to producers outside of this project.

Wisconsin Sea Grant and UWGB Center for Biodiversity hosted the third annual tobacco blessing at Wequiock Creek. Wequiock Creek is one of several natural areas managed by UWGB and is a tributary to the Bay of Green Bay. I was honored to have organized and facilitated this year’s tobacco blessing and couldn’t have done it without the previous Graduate Assistant Stephanie Dodge initiating and laying the groundwork for the event.

Dodge, another UWGB First Nations education doctoral student, knew that bringing the Indigenous voice back to the area and ensuring we do that with prayer was essential to the restoration efforts at Wequiock. “Wequiock Creek Natural Area shares a long history of shared land, water, and resources with multiple First Nations,” Dodge said. “Along the shorelines of the Bay and traveling into the Fox River has long been the location of settlements and trade routes for Indigenous people.”

The Ho-Chunk and Menominee Nations both hold ancestral land claims deriving from their creation stories that take place along the banks of Green Bay. Menominee Nation’s creation story takes place on the Menominee River near the mouth of the bay and the Ho-Chunk Nation honors the Red Banks area as their creation story location. For many Nations, their creation or origin stories hold a lot of knowledge and practices that still guide how they live their lives and practice their cultures today. These areas are not just points of interest but rather living, breathing connections to their places of origin.

Potawatomi settled in the area after migration and later through forced removal. The Oneida Nation migrated with the Stockbridge and Brothertown Nations to the area and purchased land from the Menominee Nation in the early 1800s.  As you can imagine, the area holds great meaning, historical knowledge and relevance to all the Nations mentioned.

This year’s tobacco blessing was attended by individuals representing the various invested parties in the Wequiock area including Northeast Land Trust, UWGB First Nations Education Department, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Potawatomi members, Oneida Nation members, Menominee Nation members, Ho-chunk Nation members, and others interested and committed to the restoration of a vital tributary to the Bay of Green Bay.

The highlight of the event was the youth groups from three nations: Oneida Nation High School youth singers, Potawatomi youth drum group and Menominee High School Science class students. The Menominee students helped with a site dig earlier that month with Dave Overstreet as a part of a project to recognize the lands as ancestral homelands to the Menominee Nation. The Oneida Nation High School provided earth songs and the Potawatomi youth drum group provided honor songs – a beautiful way to honor the area as well as demonstrate the beauty and uniqueness of each culture.

After the event, there was great feedback about the overall feeling and message that the blessing provided.

“It was quite a moving experience. As I delve deeper into the history of the lands that surround the Green Bay Estuary. I continue to learn,” said Collette LaRue, a Conservation Photographer and UWGB affiliate.

Dan Meinhardt, associate professor of Human Biology and curator, Richter Museum of Natural History at UWGB, has been attending since its inception.  “I am honored to have attended all three blessing events. Hearing from First Nations people with special connections to the land, especially in the songs and music of the youth, is always so moving and inspiring. The blessings have become a real highlight for me.”

The tobacco blessing is a great opportunity to reconnect people with each other, with the land, the history of the area and the rich culture it represents. Bringing people together in prayer and community provides a sense of belonging and authenticity that supports any restoration efforts being done at Wequicok Creek Natural Area.
