Forester and author Ethan Tapper explains why loving a forest means more than planting trees or criticizing the lumber industry. He argues that caring for forests and using them as a resource don’t have to be at odds. Great Lakes Now’s Lisa John Rogers spoke with Tapper about how forests can thrive when we rethink old ideas about forest management.

Salt trucks are a familiar sight in the Great Lakes region. Every winter, roads and sidewalks are covered with salt to melt ice and prevent accidents. But is the salt doing more harm than good? Citizen scientists in Ontario have been studying how salt is impacting local waterways and advocating for stronger limits on its use.

In September of 2025, dozens of people with indigenous roots from across the Great Lakes gathered on the banks of Michigan’s Au Sable River to harvest manoomin– or wild rice– the traditional way.

Manoomin is making a comeback in the Great Lakes. Once bountiful across the region, its existence has been threatened by dams and environmental pressures. Today, there is an effort among Anishinaabek peoples to restore and reconnect with this culturally important food.

An obstacle course is being built to keep invasive species out of a river.

FishPass is a project on the Boardman-Ottaway River in Traverse City, Michigan. Its goal is to allow desirable fish into the river while keeping unwanted, invasive species out. By using different obstacles, environmental conditions, and recognition technologies, FishPass will sort the fish that enter from Lake Michigan and only allow certain species upstream.

Of all the fish in the Great Lakes, muskellunge— or muskies— are one of the largest and most sought after by anglers. To keep up with the demand, the Michigan DNR aims to raise and release 40,000 muskies every year.

But raising muskies is easier said than done, especially when they’re known for being highly cannibalistic. On the Great Lakes Now YouTube channel, learn more about how the Wolf Lake State Hatchery in Mattawan, Michigan raises tens of thousands of these apex predators.

In Traverse City, Michigan, a fish obstacle course is keeping unwanted species out of a river. As dams come down around the world, native fish are returning to their home waters. But invasive species are taking advantage of that same access. So how do we separate native fish from undesirable fish?

In Traverse City, researchers are testing an innovative solution called FishPass. This system sorts native fish from invasive species using a combination of obstacles, bubble curtains, adjustable currents, and cameras that hone in on identifying features. The goal is to open the door to native fish like sturgeon, while turning away invasive species like sea lamprey.

200 years ago, the opening of the Erie Canal solved one of America’s biggest logistical problems: how to quickly move people and goods from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean.

New York governor DeWitt Clinton pushed for a canal linking Lake Erie to the Hudson River and New York City, drastically cutting travel time and costs and helping launch America’s Industrial Revolution.

Can we eat our way out of the Great Lakes mussel invasion?

Viewers have asked us if invasive quagga and zebra mussels are edible, so we looked into it. The findings? Don’t eat the mussels.

These mussels are voracious filter feeders, meaning they suck up lake water and feed on small organisms. That also means they absorb contaminants in the water, and that accumulates in the mussels.

And even if you have mussels that you know for certain come from a clean environment, they are far from seafood delicacies. Quagga and zebra mussels are small, with very little meat. Not ideal for cooking.

Meanwhile, invasive mussels are wreaking havoc on native species that are delicious, like whitefish.

Great Lakes whitefish are disappearing, largely due to an explosion of invasive mussels. These filter feeders consume much of the food that baby whitefish need to make it to adulthood.

But there may be some hope. Lake Superior, which has far fewer mussels than the other lakes, is the last refuge for whitefish. And another invasive species, the round goby, may be an unlikely ally in the fight against mussels.

Year in Review 2021: New beginnings, or a look at one-sixth of the year

For me personally, I’ll always remember 2021 as the year I achieved one of my greatest accomplishments – graduating from Zoom University back in May and eventually becoming a part of Great Lakes Now’s growing team in October.

I’m only about two months into my role as the new digital content coordinator for Great Lakes Now, but I’ve already learned a lot – and I’ve already gotten to see the team achieve a lot of great accomplishments in just the one-sixth of a year I’ve been on board.
